Lots of people think that karate is nothing more than a bunch of kicking and fancy punching, and the perception of the practice when people consider taking it on is just as misinformed.

“Oh, sweet, karate! I’ll just take a few courses and I won’t need to worry about home security or anyone attacking me. I’ll be invincible like all those guys in the movies.”

Unfortunately, it’s these kinds of expectations that lead to disillusionment regarding what is truly and wholesome and healthy activity.

For starters, karate is a physical activity requiring both tremendous endurance and unwavering commitment. You know how great and practiced and professional all those karate demonstrators look on television? They get that way because of their devotion to the practice. If you are out of shape and you think Day 1 of karate will be a bunch of fancy kicks and punches then you will be surprised. Another thing you will need to do is ditch any preconceived notions of superiority you have at the door. Karate is a practice that breeds and demands humility in order for you to learn. And don’t be surprised to find children half your age who are higher ranks than you.

“Karate” – to most people, this describes any Oriental martial art. Before committing to lessons, know that there many different styles of the Japanese art of karate. But also know that there are also many other non-Japanese martial arts that are not technically karate, though they are referred to as karate by non-practitioners. These include tae kwon do, kung fu, and jiu-jitsu.

One question to ask yourself is: what is your motivation? Is it to learn a sport, an ancient art, or self-defense? Different karate styles and schools each tend to emphasize different aspects. For example, if you are interested mainly in learning self-defense, then a very sport-based style that emphasizes scoring tags may not be the best choice.I found some more information here.

Another consideration before signing up for lessons is the age of the student. Children can benefit immensely from the self-discipline and confidence gained through karate lessons. But very young children may not have the patience to repeat the forms over and over again in the early days of training. More aggressive styles might require the student to be at least a teenager to enroll in classes. But this is just minimum age – it is never too late to get started.

When it comes to exercising our mind and body, we can benefit in so many ways. Not only can we keep ourselves at a healthy weight, but we can also reduce our risks for certain diseases and cancers. If you’re looking to take on some type of karate, it’s important that you really think about which type you’d like to decide on.

How To Decide On Which Type Of Karate To Take:

Level of karate: There are so many different levels of karate to consider. If you didn’t know already, karate levels are usually determined by the color of a person’s belt.I found some more information here. So, before you sign up for any karate class, you need to start at the first level and work your way up.

Consider your budget: Karate can be pretty costly so it’s a good idea to consider the cost of each karate class. You also want to make sure this is really something you want to do before you buy all the things needed for it.

As you can see, there are some things to think about before you sign up for just any karate class. Though all karate classes can be beneficial to anyone, it’s important to find one that works out best for you.

For hundreds of years, karate has been a form of defense for many different people. Originating in China, the first known form was a blend of martial arts and other fighting styles. The first official karate style is actually three separate types which are all very similar to each other. Those were Shuri-te, Naha-te, and Tomari-te. The variations between the three are very slight. The names were created based on the area in which they were taught and developed. In the early years, karate and other forms of self defense were taught to enable people to defend themselves and their families.

Martial arts was used extensively especially in areas where the use of any type of weapon was banned. Due to the ban on weapons, many learned to use their hands and feet as their weapons. In addition they learned how to use things such as farm tools as weapons. Today martial arts is taught in a variety of different styles. Tang su do and tae kwan do are two popular choices. Today however the martial arts teachings are done to promote self defense as well as for use in competitions. In addition the skills needed for karate also helps to improve concentration and discipline.

There are various styles of martial art disciplines. If you decide to enroll in martial arts, then you want to go with a style that is a good fit for you. This means finding a style that will exploit your strengths while helping you work on your weak areas.

Styles like karate has a main focus on striking from a standing position. Students start on their feet and trade strikes, blocks and counters. Other disciplines like Taekwondo place a much greater emphasis on kicks. This may be a good choice for those with a lot of flexibility in the lower body.

Not all martial arts emphasize on striking. Styles like Jiu-Jitsu utilize takedowns and grappling. Students work on getting a dominant position from the ground and going for a submission hold in the form of chokes and joint locks.

When deciding on a combat discipline, go with a style that feels right for you. Visit some of the schools around your area and speak with the instructor. Some schools offer a free class. This allows you to test the waters before making a commitment. It is also possible that there may only be a single school in your local area. In this case, you may just have to go with whatever style that school teaches. Regardless of which discipline you learn, it really comes down to what you make of it. In the end, it is not the style, but the person who learns it and makes the most of it.
